The Cost of Over-Eating and How to Avoid It

We all know that eating too much can lead to weight gain and a host of health problems. But, do you know why most Americans are over-eating?
What’s causing us to indulge to excess and why is it so hard to stay on track with our diets?
Let’s take a closer look at the causes of over-eating and how planning and accountability can help.
One of the biggest culprits behind overeating is the availability of unhealthy food. Fast food restaurants, convenience stores, and vending machines make it easy to access calorie-laden snacks that offer little nutritional value. When these unhealthy foods are readily available, it can be difficult for people to make healthy choices. This is especially true if they don’t have access to healthy food options nearby or don't have time for meal prep.
Another factor that contributes to over-eating is stress. Stress triggers the release of hormones like cortisol which can increase hunger levels, leading people to eat more than they normally would. When under stress people may also turn to comfort foods as a way of calming down and soothing their anxiety, leading them to consume more calories than necessary.
Finally, many people find themselves overeating due to lack of planning or accountability. Without having a plan in place or someone there to hold them accountable, it’s easy for people to slip into bad habits like eating mindlessly or skipping meals altogether. Planning meals ahead of time and keeping track of your progress can help you stay on track with your diet and avoid unhealthy decisions.
Eating too much can be costly both physically and mentally – leading not only to weight gain but increased risk for chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, etc.
By understanding what contributes towards over-eating – availability of unhealthy food options, stress levels, lack of planning and accountability – we can begin taking steps towards making healthier lifestyle choices that will benefit us in the long run.
Taking small steps towards conscious eating by planning meals ahead of time and setting realistic goals with an accountability partner are key components in avoiding overeating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle!
